Port Phillip Animal Hospital has a dedicated surgical suite catering for both soft tissue and advanced orthopaedic procedures. This allows us to perform operations from routine desexings and lump removals to emergency and advanced procedures. We are experienced with orthopaedic surgeries ranging from Cruciate Ligament and Patella Luxation repair to complex fractures.

We are able to offer the TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) procedure which is the gold standard of surgical correction for the rupture of the cruciate ligament.

General Anaesthetic and your Pet
Patients undergoing a general anaesthetic at the Port Phillip Animal Hospital are appointed a dedicated veterinarian and surgical nurse who will care for your pet throughout the day. Our trained nurses will monitor your pet continuously in conjunction with the veterinarians throughout their anaesthetic. We use the most up to date monitoring equipment to ensure your pet’s anaesthetic proceeds without complication. All patients that undergo a general anaesthetic at the Port Phillip Animal Hospital are placed on intravenous fluids (a drip) during their procedure, this assists in maintaining optimal blood pressure. We also offer all of our surgical patients pre-anaesthetic blood testing. Pre anaesthetic blood testing checks that organs such as the kidneys and liver are functioning properly. We also check that your pet has adequate red blood cells to carry enough oxygen around their body during an anaesthetic. We are able to quickly perform these important tests in our in-house laboratory.

Pain Relief
At Port Phillip Animal Hospital we firmly believe that pain relief is not an optional extra. We design individualised pain management strategies for all of our surgical patients, before, during and after their procedure. Rest easy, in the knowledge that they will be too.

A specially designated treatment area is used for dental procedures. We use an ultrasonic scaler and deluxe dental unit which allows us to clean and then polish your pet’s teeth to ensure optimum dental health is restored. It is a similar procedure to how your dentist would clean your teeth! A veterinarian can assess your pet’s teeth and use our dental Xray unit to advise you if any of them require removal or restorative procedures.

We offer FREE DENTAL CHECK with one of our experienced nurses all year around, so please call us to arrange a visit.

In-House Blood Testing
We offer a comprehensive range of pathology services at the Port Phillip Animal Hospital. We believe that pathology results should be rapidly available when your pet is unwell, has an emergency or for monitoring ongoing medical conditions. Our in-house pathology, urinalysis, blood count and serum biochemistry can be done in minutes, so appropriate treatment can be started immediately.
Annual blood checks are encouraged for all geriatric pets (over eight years of age) or for those who have been unwell or displayed a change in behaviour. These important tests can help us diagnose problems at an early and more treatable stage.

X-rays are taken and processed on site via our computed radiography unit. This allows us to make a rapid assessment and diagnosis of your pet’s condition. Commonly used for diagnosis of fractures, hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis and many other internal diseases.

Ultrasound is used at Port Phillip Animal Hospital for disease identification, pregnancy diagnosis, cancer staging and also in emergency situations. Ultrasound offers us a safe and non-invasive way of collecting information about the internal organs, either prior to surgery or possibly even eliminating the need for surgery.

Video endoscopy mainly assists in the identification of abnormalities of the digestive and respiratory systems. Biopsy samples can be collected allowing us to take a minimally invasive route to diagnosis in some patients. We also utilise this equipment to quickly retrieve foreign material – such as a bone or other ingested material – from an animal’s digestive system where necessary
